TOGETHER, WE’RE MAKING NIGHTLIFE
SAFER FOR EVERYONE.

WHAT WE DO

The Safe Bar Collective, a project of Collective Action for Safe Spaces (CASS), uses training, safety messages, and advocacy for equitable hiring practices to equip bar and restaurant staff with the tools they need to cultivate safer environments.

Our training teaches bar staff to recognize and respond to sexual harassment and everyday microaggressions. By using bystander intervention strategies to interrupt harassment, staff can prevent physical and sexual assault.

WHY IT WORKS

Alcohol doesn’t cause violence. But it’s used as a weapon or an excuse in 50% of physical and sexual assaults. This connection puts the staff of alcohol-serving establishments in a unique position to respond and work to prevent violence.

Research supports bystander intervention as one of the most effective sexual assault prevention approaches. Management and staff at alcohol-serving establishments can use bystander intervention skills to better manage aggressive behaviors and, ultimately, prevent assault — including sexual and race-based assault. Our team also works with partner bars and restaurants to improve policies and procedures around responding to incidents, and provides them with safety messages to help connect staff and patrons with further resources if they experience harassment, assault, or discrimination.

FOR BARS AND RESTAURANTS

The Safe Bar Collective is a network of bars, restaurants, and community groups working to make nightlife safer from sexual violence and discrimination. Partner bars have staff trained to use proven strategies to safely intervene to keep staff and patrons safe.

Here are some of the perks:

  • A window decal letting bar goers know that your staff is trained to respond to sexual harassment and discrimination.
  • Access to trainers for guidance, including a check-in after six months to evaluate success and field questions.
  • Access to a pipeline of trained restaurant and bartending employees.
  • Revenue back to your bar! Event organizers like District Karaoke pledge to host their events at certified bars.

Plus, you’ll know you’re leading the way toward transforming local bar culture to be safer for everyone.

*Our $600 fee covers a two-hour workshop for up to 20 participants on understanding and responding to harassment in nightlife. Adjustments may be made to meet the needs of your business.

  • “I opened my little bar with my husband in May of 2015 with the community in mind. We wanted to be a family friendly neighborhood bar. It took a while to find an outreach program that would keep both the establishment and the patrons in mind. Small businesses like ours are in need of community services like the Safe Bar Collective.”
